You Is Now, But You Will Be Was.

Eoin Purcell usually doesn’t get up my nose.

But he did today. With this tweet:

But that’s the way it goes!

It’s no different than any venture. No different than a writer creating a book. But way better than putting down a bet in a casino. Because things are being made.

This is how free enterprise works.

Here’s an unordered list of Was. All of these companies/entities existed when I first encountered microcomputing (as it was called then):

Cromemco was …
Digital Equipment Corporation was …
The Burroughs Corporation was …
Control Data Corporation (CDC) was …
Commodore, the commonly used name for Commodore International, was …
Coleco was …
Kaypro Corporation, commonly called Kaypro, was …
The Osborne Computer Corporation (OCC) was …
Data General was …
The original Atari Inc. was …
VisiCorp was …
The Source (Source Telecomputing Corporation) was …
CompuServe, (CompuServe Information Service, also known by its acronym CIS), was …
Tymnet was …
Telenet was …
Delphi was …
Softalk (ISSN 0724-9629) was …
Creative Computing was …
Compute! (ISSN 0194-357X) was …

And that’s just a small list. There are many, many more.

I’m not sorry to see most of those companies/entities gone. Some of them were real pricks when they were — temporarily! — “on top.” They thought they were truly unassailable from the “toy computers.” And some of them thought their particular home computer would last forever and keep them smugly prosperous.

All runs come to an end.

Some day, Apple will succumb to the disease that is currently strangling Sony and which has derailed the once-omnipotent Microsoft. We’ve seen Apple nearly sink while Steve Jobs was in exile.

That can happen again.

Because all runs come to an end.

But, in the meantime, hey, the iPad is coming!

Go develop for it!

Get excited and make great things. Insanely great things!
